Christopher Blue: the set has two Xenogears configurations from Lord Kane. I'm not sure if they include ATI-specific tips, but as far as I know ATI cards don't have a problem with ePSXe and its plugins. Crestfallen: I'm not sure as I don't have the Xenogears game, but I think that with Lord Kane's configs it runs pretty well. P.S: maybe I should have clarified this, but this is not a self-contained, one-click set. I just bundled together all the needed files and config guides, installation is completely manual. Originally posted by crestfallen: Nothing does Xenogears right.

It's the way the sprites are drawn. Can you elaborate?

Is it just graphical glitches that ePSXe doesnt get right with Xenogears or are there gameplay issues? I recently installed ePSXe to replay FF7 (damn, I love save states and ability back up memcards). So far it's been totally playable and the graphical enhancements makes it look like a whole new game (no hyperbole). Xenogears is next on my list, and I would hate to get deep into the game and get to an impassable point due to imperfect emulation. Graphical glitches dont really bother me, showstoppers would make me cry. As long as the game is fully playable from beginning to end, I'd be happy.

I tried running Xenogears in the linux version of ePSXe, and it seemed to run fine for the scant 10-15 minutes I played it (actually, I thought it looked damn good). After reading this thread, I'm hesitant to put any serious time into it if I'm going to cause problems later on. Meanfriend: the Lord Kane guides are the most well know ones out there, and if there is a config for Xenogears then that means the game should run without any kind of showstopper bugs. Do give this a try, I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised. Christopher Blue: like PsycZERO said, there's more to ePSXe than just higher resolution graphics. The latest versions of Pete's plugins have 2xSAI texture filtering, and I think the very latest versions I put in the set have hq2x.

On some games, that looks just incredible. No, no showstopper glitches. The game is playable end to end, provided you turn the sound off during a particular sequence which will otherwise crash the game. What I meant was that, no matter how you configure the options, something about it just doesn't look. You can use the software plugins for a more 'original' feel, but it doesn't look quite right becuase the sprites are drawn unconventionally, IIRC.

And if you use a 3d plugin, the environment looks amazing. But the characters get messed up a lil.

It's always the characters. I went ahead and googled the xenogears crash problem (yeah, there were spoilers, but whatever). Learn hindi through english pdf.

Good to hear that Xenogears is at least playable in ePSXe. Even if there are a few problem spots, there at least seems to be work arounds. When I originally played it on my PS1, I put maybe 20 hours into it and seemed to barely scratch the surface. All I really remember about XG was a story that moved like a glacier and random battles every third step. I'm hoping that the benefits of playing it through an emulator will finally motivate me to slog through it's entirety and see what the fuss is about. Originally posted by Christopher Blue: Say, I have a question regarding the PS1 bios one needs for an emulator (does the N64 emus need one too?).

Basically I want to know why one needs a bios now and not for the emus of older systems like the SNES and Gens. Also, why are BIOS illegal to distribute and why isn't there a freeware BIOS or some workaround available? Emulators for older systems don't need a BIOS image because they didn't HAVE a BIOS. Everything was loaded from the cartridge. As for why it can't be distributed- it's copyrighted Sony code. A freeware BIOS that was reverse-engineered from a Sony BIOS would probably be legal, but it would be a lot of work. And Connectix and Bleem!

Got sued into oblivion when they did that for their Virtual Game Station and Bleemcast PS emulators. The courts were on Bleem and Connectix's side, but Sony kept the lawsuit going for so long, that they just ran out of money. The developer's of any 'freeware' BIOS wouldn't stand a chance. Your PC can read PSX discs natively. They literally ARE just CD-ROMs. Pop 'em in the drive and go. The only advantage to making an image (Alcohol has a preset for Playstation discs; even with any other program it's dead easy) is faster read times since it's from HD instead of CD. I have a bunch of PS1 games I'd love to rip and play on my PC, especially if they'll look better. I don't see why not. You own the game. Actually it's very simple. Pretty much any program that makes an ISO can do so for a PSX disc-they're just CD-ROMs. IsoBuster is recommended alot. As mentioned, reading from the HD is faster than a CD-ROM and can smooth out the gameplay during spin-up/downs.

Also, it can be quieter for people with loud drives. Coupled with a utility that launches configs for games, having the ISO right there is pretty handy.
