Ah, Diablo 2, my old flame. You know, that spark I had for you was never fully extinguished. I may have moved on, but I have never forgotten. As I stare back across the gulf of time between then and now, I can't help but shed a single tear at what could have been. All those late nights clearing dungeons. Hoping for a SOJ to drop after endless Diablo/Baal/Pindle runs. Getting that sweet 6/6 CTA.

Finding a Ber and a Jah and making my own enigma. Lagging it up in a game with my skellymancer. It's enough to make a grown ass man emotional. Xoxoxoxoxo. I've had two Ber drop, and a single Jah over years of legit playing. One of the Ber runes and the Jah dropped while playing on the server, which has 'normal' drop rates but, at the time, had an extended season. They dropped within 2 months of each other, iirc.

On USEast/West, etc, the drop rates are so phenomenally low that the only reason you could trade for runes here and there is because botters were flooding the economy. Speaking of botters, I ran a bot myself on USEast, only in private games, only for my own personal gain.

I ended up running 4x hammerdins doing tons of baal runs 24/7. I found Jah/Ber/Cham/Zod runes once a week or so.

If you multiply that out, that's 4x24x7 = 672 hours of playing for a single HR. Ahh, I miss those days. I just started playing D2 again. Man what an amazing game. There are some warts for sure, but the itemization is so deep. While I like the latest patches of D3, its itemization is still nowhere near as nuanced. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I loved having to do specific tasks associated with what I was looking for.

Want some runes? Farm some Countess. Want to make some runewords with those runes? Farm Cows for white items.

Want some high level runes? Run some lowbies or grind your own for forges. Have some extra gems?

Get a Baal ilvl 99 grand charm to reroll. Just want some uniques like Shako? Install adobe photoshop free software. Go beat up Meph. Want an anni charm?

Boot up a terminal and hunt Uber D servers. Not saying it didn't have flaws, and it had an extremely large knowledge barrier. But I personally loved it. Eh, my big complaint for D2 is that the singleplayer was. If I wanted to get a runeword with a Zod rune, I was pretty much SOL unless I wanted to bot, and the drop rate for a lot of things was prohibitively low if you needed something in particular. I think D3 went too far the other way (too easy to get every specific thing you need, so progression is more numeric optimization than qualitative gear upgrades), but a better balance would have been nice. That said, I'm pretty sure one of the later patches substantially improved drop rates and I haven't played much since.

And, of course, it's one of the first games I re-install every time I re-image my computer, and I've been backing up and transferring my saves for the last. Shit, 8 years or so? I agree, it was an amazing game, but it definitely did have flaws.
